Sand Bubbler Crab

Scopimera intermedia

Has a small, round body under 1 cm in size.

Sieves through the organic matter in the sand and leaves behind round sand pellets, hence its English common name Sand Bubbler Crab. Its characteristic radial pattern of sand pellets found on the shore is a way to identify its presence.

The presence of a tympanic membrane, which aids gaseous exchange, on the merus (thigh) of each walking leg is the key feature of the sand bubbler crab and hence its Chinese name “Merus Window Crab” (股窗蟹).
