One of the few crabs that can walk forward and back. It has a distinct light-blue body with white legs.

The origin of its Chinese name 短指和尚蟹 ("Monk Crab") is because of its egg-shaped carapace. Its English common name describes its gregarious behaviour when it forages at low tide.

其中文名「和尚蟹」的由來是因為牠蛋形的頭胸甲，而身牠的英文俗名則描述了和尚蟹在退潮覓食時如士兵般的聚集行為

When threatened, it will rapidly burrow into the sand in a corkscrew motion.

受到威脅時，牠們會以螺旋形的動作迅速鑽入沙中
